Continuing Education Committee

MISSION

The BSCES Continuing Education Committee advances the Society goal of becoming the pre-eminent provider of professional development programs for civil engineers in Massachusetts. By delivering high-quality professional development opportunities through lectures, seminars, and training programs on relevant topics, the committee strengthens BSCES’ ability to be an important source for obtaining continuing education, helps defray Society operating costs, and supports ASCE’s Raising the Bar Initiative.

ACTIVITIES

In order to address BSCES member educational needs, the Continuing Education Committee meets monthly, typically in the last week of the month, and develops a curriculum of professional development program offerings that is:

  • comprised of a varied mix of program options including full and half-day seminars, lecture series, multi-day training programs, select one to two hour lectures, and webinars;
  • focused, to a large extent, on imparting technical knowledge;
  • ideally has a base curriculum comprised of set of program offerings that address the varied BSCES member continuing education needs; is delivered in progression that occurs over several years and eventually repeats;
  • supplements that core curriculum with program offerings that are more topical in nature.

To achieve its goals, the Continuing Education Committee currently runs seminars offered by the National Highway Institute on bridge and tunnel inspection, and is responsible for the biannual Professional Engineer Refresher Course, currently being held virtually.
