Wind and Waves: Experiments in Coastal Resilience

Courtesy of Northeastern University

Northeastern University Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Qin Jim Chen (right) and his PhD student Reza Salatin deploy a sensor near Chen's lab at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts. Chen develops and applies numerical models to address how coastal communities can strengthen their resilience against powerful storms. During each summer's hurricane season, he works with partners on the East and Gulf Coasts to deploy sensors in the paths of approaching storms. The collected data helps researchers better understand coastal hurricane processes and helps policymakers prepare critical infrastructure for future disasters.
