Stormwater retention aims to mitigate the effects of development by managing a portion of runoff on-site and is commonly required on projects pursuant to green infrastructure and low-impact development objectives. Subsurface infiltration systems, sometimes known as recharge systems, are a common solution to meet retention goals. In densely developed urban environments, implementing a subsurface recharge solution with the requisite capacity can be challenging. Often urban projects are laden with several constraints, technical challenges, and significant risks associated with the subsurface recharge system. Risks can include seepage effects on structural and waterproofing systems, impacts on local utility systems, and failure to meet performance objectives. Decentralized solutions that may include rooftop retention, subsurface recharge, and other strategies to meet retention requirements can be attractive in urban scenarios where space is valuable. We discuss multidisciplinary considerations related to subsurface recharge and rooftop retention “Green Roof” strategies as a means to achieve retention requirements on highly constrained urban sites.
