Journal Editorial Board

MISSION

Support of publication of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section Journal, Civil Engineering Practice.

 

Members of the board solicit papers, correspond with prospective authors, organize technical peer reviews, work with the Journal’s professional editor and work at other tasks in support of the Journal’s publication.
 

STRUCTURE

The Editorial board consists of BSCES members representing the Society’s different technical divisions. The Journal is a practice-oriented publication but also seeks a strong representation from among local colleges and universities. The board seeks membership from the Western Massachusetts division of BSCES. The board is headed by a Chair. Key subcommittees and chairs are appointed as needed. The Journal is edited by a professional technical editor.
 

MEETINGS

The board meets twice a year, typically for breakfast meetings.  Additional communication is via a bi-annual update letter, the editorial paper tracking database and frequent e-mail messages.
 

CHARGE

The Professional Editor:
    * Collates and edits Civil Engineering Practice, published twice a year.
      Note: Content includes papers, advertisements, editorials, paper database listing, cover, table of contents and other
      articles.
    * Works directly with the printer to deliver mockup of the assembled Journal, and oversee printing, mailing and
      delivery.
    * Interacts with the Editorial Board to receive and edit papers.  Interacts with authors during the editing process.
    * Maintains the subscription database.
    * Maintains the advertiser database.
    * Prepares the Board’s annual report.
    * Works on many other tasks in support of the Journal, such as copyright issues, correspondence with other
      publications, etc.

 

The Chair:

    * Calls and runs the meetings; makes sure that communication is working properly.
    * Identifies potential paper topics and authors.
    * Reviews and approves invoices.
    * Reviews galley prints of upcoming issues of the Journal.
    * As needed, serves as the deciding vote for editorial production questions related to Journal content and length.
    * Is responsible to see that work of subcommittees is being performed satisfactorily and works with chairs (and
      appoints new chairs if necessary to correct deficiencies).
    * Helps arrange topics for special issues, appoints guest editors.
 

The Chair of the Editorial Subcommittee:

    * Maintains the prospective paper database.
    * Organizes peer reviews of papers submitted to the Journal; assists with paper reviews and reviewer participation.
    * Corresponds with prospective authors.
    * Identifies potential paper topics and authors.

 

The Chair of the Advertising Subcommittee:

    * Arranges for advertisers to the Journal and helps maintain the advertiser database.

 

Member of the Editorial Board:

    * Attends bi-annual meetings.
    * Identifies potential paper topics and authors.
    * Reviews papers.

 

Serves as contact to prospective authors during peer review and helps arrange for paper reviewers.
