In 2021, BSCES established the Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) Boston Chapter, whose mission is to advance the utility engineering and surveying industry through collaboration, dissemination of technological advances, and raising public awareness. The UESI Boston Chapter meets once a month to discuss topics related to utility engineering and surveying and to plan upcoming events. The committee consists of twelve members with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. UESI-Boston is looking for new committee members who can contribute new topics and ideas for future events. Please reach out if you are interested in joining!

Topics of Interest
The UESI Boston Chapter focused on several topics of interest within utility engineering and surveying over the last year, including:

  • Publications and resources related to performing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), and considerations for implementing SUE during project design.
  • Methods and techniques for trenchless utility installations.
  • Best practices for pipe condition assessments and associated rehabilitation methods.
  • Methods for addressing subsurface utility risks during project development.

Recent and Upcoming Events
UESI Boston Chapter sponsored a webinar on May 22, 2025, titled “Alignment and Equipment Recovery During Challenging Trenchless Construction.” The webinar discussed a case study highlighting adaptations to trenchless utility construction in a dense urban environment. The webinar also discussed the importance of utility tunneling within the case study compared to a traditional auger bore method.

UESI Boston Chapter is planning to sponsor another webinar in fall 2025 titled “Navigating Subsurface Utility Risks During Project Development.” The webinar will discuss strategies and methods for navigating subsurface utility risks, including detailed due diligence, coordination with stakeholders, and SUE. The webinar will include project examples that examine implementing risk-mitigating strategies and associated effects on the project’s design.
