Boston Chapter of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI): Advancing Structural Engineering Through Education, Collaboration, and Innovation
The Boston Chapter of the Structural Engineers Institute (SEI) serves as a hub for structural engineering professionals seeking to advance their technical knowledge, build meaningful connections, and contribute to the future of the profession. As part of the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES), our chapter provides continuing education opportunities, member engagement programs, and networking events that strengthen both individual careers and the broader engineering community.
Our Mission and Focus
At its core, the Boston Chapter of SEI is dedicated to promoting excellence in structural engineering and our mission statement is “to advance and serve the structural engineering profession.” We aim to keep our members informed of evolving standards, new technologies, and best practices across the industry. Through in-person technical seminars, webinars, and collaborative events, we create spaces where engineers can exchange ideas, discuss real-world challenges, and learn from leading experts in the field.
Our programs are designed for engineers at all stages of their careers, from students and early-career professionals to senior engineers and firm principals. By fostering professional development and knowledge sharing, we help members stay current in a rapidly changing profession and support the continued growth of our local engineering community.
Recent and Upcoming Events
In keeping with our mission, Boston Chapter of SEI has hosted and planned several engaging technical sessions in 2024–2025. Earlier this year, we presented a webinar focused on the recent changes to the Hydrologic and Hydraulic Requirements for bridge design as part of the updated MassDOT Bridge Manual (100th Anniversary Edition). This event drew strong attendance from both public- and private-sector engineers and provided a valuable forum to discuss how these changes will influence future design practices.
Looking ahead, we are excited to host two in-person seminars on “Artificial Intelligence in Bridge Design” which took place on November 5, and the second will be on December 10 at Tufts University. These sessions will explore how emerging AI tools are beginning to shape the design process and asset management. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with experts in computational design, learn about real-world applications, and discuss how technology may redefine traditional workflows in the years ahead.
Collaboration Across BSCES
The Boston Chapter of SEI recognizes that some of the most impactful initiatives come from collaboration. We frequently partner with other BSCES groups, including the Construction Institute (CI) and the Younger Member Group (YMG), to co-host joint events and broaden participation across disciplines and generations. These partnerships allow us to connect structural engineers with professionals in construction, geotechnical engineering, and transportation, helping foster interdisciplinary understanding that is essential for successful projects.
By working together with our BSCES colleagues, we are able to offer events that not only educate but also strengthen professional networks and build a sense of community within the civil engineering profession.
Get Involved
We encourage all structural engineers, whether you’re a recent graduate or a seasoned practitioner, to get involved with SEI Boston. Membership offers numerous benefits, including access to technical programs, professional development hours, and leadership opportunities. Joining our committee is also a great way to meet peers, share ideas, and contribute to the direction of our local engineering community.
If you’re interested in becoming more involved, please reach out to the SEI Boston Chapter through the BSCES website or attend one of our upcoming events. We are always looking for enthusiastic members who want to help shape the future of the profession.
Together, we can continue to advance structural engineering through education, collaboration, and innovation. We can also ensure that our community remains at the forefront of technical excellence in the Commonwealth and beyond.
