Brendan G. Herridge, EIT, ENV SP, Structural Engineer, Jacobs, and BSCES Younger Member Group Chair
The BSCES Younger Member Group (YMG) serves with the mission to foster the professional growth, ethical awareness, and technical competence of the section’s younger members. The YMG often organizes and encourages community outreach, supports engineering students at local colleges and universities, and promotes membership and participation in ASCE and BSCES committees, institute chapters, technical groups, and plans other activities.
YMG hosts monthly events including technical presentations focused on topics relevant to students and professionals alike, networking/social outings, and community outreach and service opportunities. These events serve as a means of connecting young engineers and students to their peers, expanding professional networks, learning about the various companies and services within civil engineering, and in general celebrating our role in the broader community. Our most recent event was our December 2024 Holiday Party at American Flatbread at Sacco’s Bowl Haven.

Events are organized through the monthly meetings, which are attended by the YMG executive committee of approximately 20 volunteers, as well as other members seeking further involvement. Monthly meetings are used to collect thoughts on past events, coordinate future events, and discuss new opportunities that support the technical and soft skills of YMG members. YMG frequently aims to collaborate with other professional organizations within BSCES/ASCE and other engineering professional groups such as the Structural Engineers Association of Massachusetts (SEAMASS) younger member group and the Young Professionals in Transportation (YPT).
Some events YMG has hosted in the past years include the Student Chapter Officers’ Caucus, a food sorting event at Greater Boston Food Bank, a Holiday Party with ‘Christmas in the City’ Toy Drive at Sacco’s Bowl Haven, BSCES Student Night at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., and the Junior and Senior Tech Talks.
In November 2024, we were able to bring 12 of our members to the Greater Boston Food Bank where we spent a few hours prepping food items like oatmeal and carrots, setting up items to get them ready for packing food into boxes, and preparing boxes for the next groups to be able to sort food into. All together during the time we spent we managed to pack enough boxes for a few thousand families and did so without any mistakes! After our successful packing, we were able to continue the event at a nearby location where we enjoyed some networking over food and a beverage and celebrated a productive day. Looking ahead from this volunteer opportunity, YMG is always willing to support the community and have a few opportunities we hope to bring to the group in 2025.

This year, the YMG is focusing on enhancing our committee through two main initiatives – separate professional and social event coordination and student outreach and engagement. By separating our event coordination efforts, we aim to offer more events each month including both technical programs and networking opportunities like our Junior and Senior Tech Talks and Billiards Tournament, respectively. By actively engaging more students we seek to include them in more events, encourage connections between student chapters and YMG members and aid in a smoother transition after graduation.
YMG members are excited about the events planned this spring and summer, and we look forward to seeing some new faces there!
