On Thursday, July 23 at the Massachusetts State House, BSCES released the 2026 Report Card for Massachusetts’ Infrastructure to a room full of members, public agency colleagues, media, and State House staff. ASCE 2027 President Carol Haddock, PE, MPA, F.ASCE, attended and spoke to the crowd before the grades were revealed.
After over two years of research and writing by more than 20 member volunteers led by Patrick Tierney, PE, NETTCP, BSCES Government Affairs & Professional Practice Committee chair, Massachusetts’ infrastructure was assigned a grade of ‘D+,’ two steps below the national grade of ‘C.’
The report card finds that Massachusetts’ infrastructure is aging faster than it is being repaired. Many systems are decades older than their intended design life and are facing extraordinary strain from increasingly severe weather, coastal exposure, and other factors. Recent funding at the federal and state level has helped stabilize some infrastructure assets, particularly in the transportation sector. However, sustained, predictable investment is needed to prevent further deterioration and expand an engineering workforce that is currently not large enough to carry out all necessary projects.
