Interested in helping design a steel bridge? A concrete canoe? Meeting professionals? Learning more about civil engineering? Then join ASCE, we participate in two competitions each year, the steel bridge competition as well as the concrete canoe competition. We also allow you to meet professionals in the field and learn more about civil engineering.
The Wentworth chapter of ASCE plans to have year full of new, ambitious, and exciting events. In our first few meetings we have worked even harder than in years past to entice new members as it is one of our main goals to increase club membership. Prior to the start of this school year our club was primarily students preparing to graduate this year so we have focused on engineering challenges meant to excite and prepare new and old team members for the upcoming spring competitions. In addition, we are enthused to attend the National ASCE Convention in New York City for the first time. We also have many engaging and rewarding activities planned for the fall semester, including service projects within the mission hill community, a clean-up of the Neponset River and weekly guest speakers throughout the month of October.
For the spring our goals are to continue community service, participate in the bridge competition, and excel in the concrete canoe competition. We will uphold our commitment to community service by continuing to attending the annual Model Bridge and Future City Competitions, as we believe it is important to inspire the youth to participate in STEM.
We will also be attending the bridge competition this year, a missed opportunity last year given our members felt too inexperienced to compete. The break year has given us even more motivation to contend this year and has also attributed to the focus of bringing in new members and teaching them the skills needed to continue the club for years on.
The most anticipated is the Concrete Canoe Competition which we are honored to host this year! Winning 6th place last year has us energized and ready to place even higher this year. We have plans to implement new software and techniques in order to create a canoe better than ever before. We also intend to host a great competition not to be missed!
