WPI’s ASCE Student Chapter Competes and Places in Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Competitions at ASCE Northeast Student Symposium

Members of the ASCE Student Chapter at Worcester Polytechnic Institute traveled to the UMass Amherst this month to attend the ASCE Northeast Student Symposium and compete in the regional Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge competitions. The WPI ASCE Student Chapter was one of eight chapters at Massachusetts colleges and universities that applied for and received a grant from BSCES in January. Student Chapter President Amber Lyons wrote a letter to BSCES President Chris Hersey to report on their experience at the Symposium.

Dear BSCES,

Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s ASCE Student Chapter would like to deeply thank you for your contributions to our regional competition teams this year. When applying for the student chapter grant, we were unsure if our school and students would be able to afford to compete in the regional Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, but with your assistance, we were able to fully fund our members’ participation and compete successfully, and place in both competitions for the first time in many years!

It is important for our club members to have the opportunity to attend these competitions and further their professional development, and many of our members could not have afforded to attend without BSCES gracious grant. With your contribution, I am very pleased to announce that the concrete canoe team placed third place behind the Université Laval and École de technologie supérieure. This is a huge improvement from previous years, and this accomplishment would not have been possible without your support. Additionally, our steel bridge team was able to build a 555lb bridge in under 27 minutes, placing 2nd in aesthetics and 3rd for stiffness! On top of these massive leaps, our chapter was able to bring 23 people to competition this year!

Below are some pictures that show how BSCES helped our chapter compete and gain lifelong memories with ASCE. I would like to personally thank you again. It would not have been possible without you!

Best,
Amber Lyons
