Student Affairs Committee

MISSION

To maintain communications between the Section and the ASCE Student Chapter/Club that promote professional, ethical and technical competence in students studying civil engineering technology.  The committee shall promote continued professional growth by encouraging membership in the ASCE and local Section.  Student Chapters are currently active at:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Merrimack College
Northeastern University
Tufts University
University of Massachusetts at Amherst
University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth
University of Massachusetts at Lowell
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
The Student Club is currently active at the Wentworth Institute of Technology.

STRUCTURE

The committee consists of a chairperson and six other members.

MEETINGS

Meetings are generally held monthly, exclusive of the summer months, with additional meetings being held as the need arises.

CHARGE
The committee is responsible for organizing and conducting the annual Student Night, which is normally held in the spring. Section student awards and scholarships are normally presented to deserving students at the annual Student Night. The committee is responsible for administering the following awards:
 

  • Howe-Walker Student Awards: A cash prize in the amount of the first year's dues to the national society, BSCES, and if the BSCES would not be in the student's local Section, first-year dues in the section where he/she will be residing, and a framed certificate; one prize may be awarded annually to a member of each student chapter/club in the Section area.

 
Each faculty advisor is contacted at least two months prior to the annual awards ceremony requesting recommendations of one student who is worthy of particular recognition. These recommendations are reviewed by the committee and forwarded to the Board of Government for approval at least one month prior to the awards ceremony.
 

  • Fitzgerald and Morse Awards: Monetary awards, of amounts to be determined by the Board of Government, may be given annually to deserving chapter members as follows:
  • Desmond Fitzgerald Award - Northeastern University
  • William P. Morse Award - Tufts University


The faculty advisor at each applicable institution provides a recommendation for a recipient to the committee at least two month prior to the awards ceremony.  They are reviewed by the committee and recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Government for approval at least one month prior to the awards ceremony.

FINANCIAL

The Student part of the Members' Contributory Fund provides monies for awards and student activities.  This fund is an invested fund with interest added to the principal.  The Fitzgerald and Morse Funds provide support for their respective awards, and the Howe-Walker Fund provides support for the Howe-Walker awards.  Funds for other committee activities come from the Section's general treasury.
