The BSCES is proud to be the home of not only one of the biggest volunteer pre-college engineering outreach programs in the world, but also a nationally known leader in the promotion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education. This is an entirely volunteer effort and the secret to its success is volunteers like you.
The full list of BSCES educational outreach activities is extensive, and there are volunteer opportunities for anyone willing to give even a couple hours of their time a year. Programs include: • Thinkfest – a carnival of hands-on design challenges including water testing, dam building and many more! • The Future City Competition – students dream up their vision of the perfect city of the future and then make it “come alive” by using real life engineering and technology • Two model bridge contests – one where we smash physical bridges and one where the bridges are virtual, submitted online. • Construction Career Days – a pavilion full of engineering design challenges for the over 1300 students attending this incredible field trip for high school students • Boston Bridge Tours – teach students about the basics of bridge design on this walking tour of Boston’s bridges CLICK HERE for the catalog of BSCES Outreach Activities To communicate with the public, the BSCES maintains a special website called www.engineeryourfuture.org. Be sure to visit this site to see all that they are doing.
The calendar of activities is constantly growing. BSCES posts events on its google calendar (publically shared calendar “BSCES Public Awareness & Outreach") and through tweets (@engineeryrfutur). Reed Brockman also posts all activities and updates daily on Facebook and LinkedIn. Activities are also announced through email blasts and in the BSCES Newsletter. Get in touch with the BSCES Public Awareness & Outreach Committee here.
In 2011, BSCES volunteers wrote a book to better explain our profession to young people (as well as the general public). The book is entitled “From Sundaes to Space Stations: Careers in Civil Engineering”. This book can be purchased through BSCES by downloading the order form. All proceeds benefit the BSCES Outreach program. Our goal is to get the book to schools and libraries. Please consider purchasing copies of the book to donate.
