BSCES runs a local version of the ASCE / West Point Bridge Design Contest, which we call the Ralph Salvucci Online Bridge Design Contest. According to Col. Stephen Ressler, the creator of this contest at West Point, we are the first ASCE local chapter to run a successful competition and by far the largest source of entrants into the competition anywhere in the country. Where the national contest offers a few very large prizes, this local contest offers a large number of small prizes. Last year, we gave cash prizes to the top 3 teams. Other prizes include Amazon gift certificates, civil engineering related books, and ASCE T-shirts and certificates to the Top 100 teams. As students enroll in the competition, we assign them e-mentors who make themselves available to answer questions for the students. Press releases are sent to the principals and local papers for each of the Top 100 teams. A banquet is held for the winners. |
