Environmental & Water Resources Group

MISSION

To advance scientific knowledge and promote sound engineering thought and practice in the solution of problems of environmental sanitation, notably in the provision of safe, palatable and ample public and industrial water supplies; the proper disposal of or recycle of wastewater and solid and hazardous wastes; the adequate drainage of urban and rural areas for proper sanitation; the control of water, soil and atmospheric pollution; and the consideration of social and environmental impacts of these solutions.

To be well informed concerning engineering problems in the field of public health, such as control of insect-borne diseases, the elimination of industrial health hazards and the provision of adequate sanitation in urban, rural, recreational areas and to give consideration of the effects of technological advances on the environment.

To advance and disseminate scientific and engineering knowledge in all branches of hydraulics, hydrology, hydraulic engineering and water resources.  In particular this will embrace meteorology and hydrology as the sciences dealing with the occurrence of water in the atmosphere, on the earth surface and in the ground, fluid mechanics for the understanding of all flow phenomena, applied hydraulics for the design and planning of hydraulic structures and of comprehensive systems and those social, economic and administrative aspects basic to the conservation and utilization of water as an essential natural resource.

GROUP CHARGE
• Sponsor 3 dinner meetings
• Every two years manage a Camp Lecture <Thomas R. Camp Fund>.  On alternate years manage a Kennison Fund Lecture <Karl R. Kennison Fund>.
• Sponsor an annual field trip.
• Every third year the Group holds a three-night lecture series (typically 2 speakers per night).  At that time, the number of dinner meetings is reduced to one.
•  Every third year one of the dinner meetings is dedicated to a Past Chairs Dinner.
• To assist in the arrangements for the annual Freeman Lecture <John R. Freeman Fund>.

ESTABLISHED

The Environmental Technical group was originally established under the name Sanitary Section in 1904.  Its name was changed in 1972 following a similar change at the ASCE national level.  The Hydraulics and Water Resources Group was established in 1938.  In 2006 the two groups were merged to be consistent with the similar ASCE national institute structure.
