BSCES Infrastructure Group and Public Awareness & Outreach Committee
The BSCES Public Awareness & Outreach Committee (PA&O) has always felt it was adequately reaching out to K-12 students, but the Committee has been searching for a great way to satisfy the “Public Awareness” end of its mission. One day out of the blue, Boston Neighborhood Network station manager Bob Lamm contacted them about making a TV show about Civil Engineering, and it just seemed to make sense.
We are now heading into our sixth episode and have focused on environmental impacts of design, bridge and tunnel design, storm water engineering, engineering in K-12 education, and traffic signalization. The Committee is led by Ana Cristina Fragoso, with alternating hosts Raul Arauz, Artie Bonney, Reed Brockman, and Ana Cristina herself. Joanna Lunsford and Michelle Jose assist with the show off-screen.
The show is broadcast live, and takes call-ins, on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6pm on BNN-TV 9, a Boston-only Comcast channel. For those without access to BNN-TV 9, by the time this article is published (or coming soon if not!) the show will be available via stream off the site www.bsces.org under the “Resources” pull-down menu. Also, we have created a limited number of DVD’s including collections of episodes.
Since the last issue, two new episodes have aired. In September, the focus was integrating engineering into pre-college education, with special guest Yvonne Spicer from the National Center for Technological Literacy and co-hosted by Ana Cristina and Reed. The October show focused on traffic signalization and was hosted by Artie Bonney with special guest Phil Vivieros, the recent Bertram Berger Award winner.
