Mission

 

The Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (BSCES) is a professional organization that excels in its technical programs, enhances the professional growth of its members, advances engineering knowledge and works to improve the standards of practice.

What BSCES does for its members and the public

• Professional Development is our major focus: seminars, lecture series, along with lunch and dinner technical meetings and programs, provide unique opportunities for engineers to interact with their peers.
• Ten Technical Groups, the heartbeat of BSCES, generate the society's programs. BSCES members are involved directly with program planning through the specialty Technical Groups, which include: Construction, Engineering Management, Environmental and Water Resources, Geo-Institute, Infrastructure, Land Development, Structural, Transportation, Waterways, and Younger Member Group.
• Our Legislative Fellows Program places a BSCES member on the staff of a committee in the Massachusetts legislature, providing technical advice and counsel to legislators and their staffs as they face complex public policy challenges.
• BSCES Younger Members, engineers under the age of 35 committed to the professional development of BSCES young members, plans activities that include a fall field trip, winter dinner meeting and spring Red Sox outings.
• Through our Outreach Program, we educate students of all levels through classroom visits, contests and presentations about career opportunities in engineering.
• Fifteen plus active committees provide the administrative and professional balance to BSCES. Committees include: Student Affairs, Public Awareness and Outreach, Continuing Education, Government Affairs and more.
• Our monthly newsletter BSCESNews lists upcoming programs and job openings and contains technical and topical articles that enhance the reader’s understanding of the civil engineering practice.
• The world-renowned BSCES Civil Engineering Practice Journal captures the spirit and substance of contemporary civil engineering through articles that emphasize techniques now being applied successfully in civil engineering works. Published twice a year, the Journal is complimentary to all members.  Non-members may pay to subscribe.
• Keeping professionals on the cutting edge of the latest engineering work, our Lecture Series feature timely topics and well-known speakers. Published proceedings include Structural Details in Steel and Concrete Buildings, Rehabilitation of Waterfront Structures, and Design, Construction and Performance of Deep Excavations in Urban Areas. These proceedings and more are available for sale at The Engineering Center.
